How Made-to-Measure Wedding Dress Sizing Works

Buying a wedding dress off-the-rack means accepting a set of standard measurements that may not reflect your body at all. Made-to-measure is different: your gown is cut and constructed specifically for your measurements, resulting in a fit that feels effortless and looks impeccable. Here’s everything you need to know about the process.

What Is Made-to-Measure?

Made-to-measure (MTM) means your dress is drafted from a base pattern that is then adjusted to your individual measurements before a single seam is sewn. This is distinct from:

• Off-the-rack: A finished dress in a standard size that you alter after purchase.
• Bespoke/couture: A dress created entirely from scratch with a custom pattern unique to you (typically far more expensive).

Made-to-measure sits between the two — delivering a personalised fit at a more accessible price point than full bespoke.

What Measurements Are Taken?

To create your made-to-measure gown, we need the following measurements. We recommend having someone else take these for accuracy:

• Bust: Measured at the fullest part of the chest, keeping the tape parallel to the floor.
• Waist: Measured at the narrowest part of your natural waist (typically just above the navel).
• Hips: Measured at the fullest part of your hips and seat, usually 20–23 cm below the natural waist.
• Height: Measured barefoot from the top of your head to the floor.
• Hollow to floor: Measured from the hollow at the base of your throat to the floor — this determines your gown length.
• Shoulder width: Measured from the edge of one shoulder to the other across the back.

When Should You Take Your Measurements?

Take your measurements as close to your order date as possible — ideally within one to two weeks of placing the order. Bodies change, and a measurement taken too early may not reflect your actual size at the time of production.

If you are planning to lose or gain weight before your wedding, let us know at the time of ordering so we can discuss the best approach. In general, it is easier to take a dress in than to let it out, so we may recommend ordering to your current measurements with that in mind.

How Long Does Production Take?

Each Payton Bridal gown is made to order. Our current production window is approximately 16–20 weeks from order confirmation to dispatch. We recommend ordering at least five to six months before your wedding date to allow comfortable time for any final adjustments on your end.

Do I Still Need Alterations?

Made-to-measure dramatically reduces — but does not always eliminate — the need for alterations. Minor tweaks (hem length for your exact heel height, strap adjustments) are common and normal. Because we build to your key measurements, the main structural fit is already accounted for.
